FLASH AND EDGE MELTING

Automatic Deflashing and Flash Removal System for Injection-Moulded Plastic Parts

Injection-moulded plastic components often exhibit unwanted thin films—known as flash—along seams or edges. This flash forms when molten polymer seeps through small gaps in the mould, leaving behind sharp or uneven ridges once cooled.

Traditional flash-removal methods, such as manual trimming or mechanical deflashing, are slow, inconsistent, and labour-intensive. A modern alternative is flame-based deflashing, also called edge melting or flash removal by flame. Using a precisely controlled gas flame, the thin excess material is melted away cleanly—without damaging or discolouring the underlying component.

Robot Mounted Flash Removal

Process Description

Our flame flash-removal systems deliver fast, consistent, and repeatable results suitable for high-volume production. By integrating with robotic arms or conveyor systems, they form part of a fully automated deflashing cell that eliminates manual finishing, reduces scrap, and improves product uniformity.

As shown in the video below, the Rapidflame D6 burner performs robotic deflashing of plastic components in seconds, producing a perfectly smooth edge ready for assembly or surface treatment.

Key Advantages

Benefits of Automated Flame Deflashing

  • Consistent results – uniform edge quality every cycle

  • Fast cycle times – ideal for inline or robotic applications

  • No tool wear or dust – unlike grinding or trimming

  • Low operating cost – minimal labour and consumables

  • Compact integration – easily retrofitted to existing moulding lines

Applications Across Industries

Whether you manufacture automotive plastics, consumer products, medical housings, or industrial enclosures, our flame deflashing systems provide a reliable, cost-effective solution for flash removal and edge finishing.

Our systems are compatible with most thermoplastics, including PP, ABS, HDPE, and nylon, and can be configured for complex component geometries.
