Moulded plastic components often have sharp edges caused by thin films (or “flash”) of plastic extending from the moulded surface, due to plastic leakage through joints in the mould. Mechanical removal is labour intensive and difficult. Gas flames can be used to melt the extended flash, giving a smooth finish.
